Dr Shaheem de Vries is proudly Cape Tonian; Born and bred. That his life has evolved to embrace medicine, is transparently, an arc that began with his desire to drive an ambulance as a child.

As a First Responder sirens blaring, hurtling towards motor accidents or medical emergencies in dimly lit, spartan, tight spaces in the townships, the intimacy of emergency medicine took on a visceral reality, far removed from the medical dramas on television.

These experiences have shaped Shaheem, keeping his feet firmly planted in the Why he loves medicine, why excellent medical service must be accessible to all and why the luminal spaces are pivotal in excavating the soul of medical practice.
