I was thinking about a wee incident by some standing stones this summer when it occurred to me that while religion- or at least scholars sponsored by it- preserved much of what we know of the classical world, actions by evangelists from that same religion led to one of the most brutal and sustained invasions these islands have ever suffered. In time the religious infiltrated the invaders leadership, converting the powerful and giving us our modern view of those poor, oppressed Christians. But they brought the invasion down on their own heads: their actions during and after the event did nothing to alleviate the suffering of the people. They had to figure their own way out of the mess created by those whose calling is to pester the gods...
It's a lot more fun these days : http://www.visithebrides.com/

This is about all the Scots ever get to hear about the father of the entire Gaelic race : http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/s...
Kinda pathetic, given the fucking screeds we get spoon fed about the Bruce's (Norman) struggle against the Plantagenets (Norman) for control of a country that didn't even exist until they started squabbling over it.
Somhairle Mhor's decendents view : http://www.clanranald.org/cln1/about/...
The BBCs propaganda. (Remember, theirs is the sanitised, Anglo/London centric view of everything. Bad enough in their view that Somerled be Scots, but a Viking as well? This is the shite we have to put up with, people... :-( ) : http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/history...
This is a fairer summary- although the Maiden (King David) never actually took to the field against Somhairle, as the article suggests. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk...
A decent book on the subject is Somerled, by John Marsden. ISBN-10: 1904607802
ISBN-13: 978-1904607809
Somhairle Mhor is one of those characters who everyone knows about, so no-one ever bothers to elaborate on him. The Gaelic is dying as a native language, even as the number of speakers learning it increases. Very soon the oral tradition I grew up with, where Siol Goraidh permeates any discussion of the great Clans and the Lords of the Isles, will be wiped from history. All we'll be left with is the lies spouted by his enemies and the half truths and 'just so' tales of English speaking scholars.
And one beardie youtube video! ;-)
