Title: SIGNALS, NOISE, AND THE PHYSICAL LIMITS TO BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION
Abstract: Intended for faculty and advanced graduate students, this talk will explore biological systems
in which there is clear experimental evidence that organisms operate close to the physical limits. Dr. Bialek will discuss what we can accomplish by elevating this (near-)optimality into a principle from which we derive aspects of function and mechanism in systems ranging from the developing embryo to the retina to our own perceptions.
