SK On is making a bold move into North America’s energy storage system (ESS) market with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. The company has signed an agreement to supply 7.2 GWh of LFP batteries to Flatiron Energy between 2026 and 2030, with mass production beginning in the second half of 2026.
To achieve this, SK On is repurposing EV battery production lines at its Georgia facility and planning new U.S. plants, aiming for more than 180 GWh of annual capacity. LFP batteries are cheaper and safer than nickel-based chemistries, making them especially attractive for stationary energy storage.
While supply chain constraints and scaling remain challenges, this strategy positions SK On as a key player in reshaping the North American energy storage market. It also underscores the shift toward LFP battery adoption in the clean energy transition.
Stay tuned with The Metalnomist for expert insight on battery chemistry trends, energy storage expansion, and critical materials policy.
