Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine Saturday “based on humanitarian considerations” during Easter.
Putin warned troops will remain on high alert for potential violations “by the enemy,” adding that he assumes Ukraine will “follow our example.” As air raid sirens wail throughout Ukraine, residents seem doubtful Putin will honour the ceasefire.
The declaration comes a day after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the country will stop trying to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless there are clear signs that a deal can be done.
Additionally, the warring nations exchanged 277 prisoners of war on Saturday, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense.
