Nestled between Manhattan’s Lower East Side to its east, Tribeca to its west, the Civic Centre to its south and Little Italy to its North, Manhattan’s Chinatown is home to 141,000 residents packed into 1.7 square miles, of which nearly a third identify as Asian.

Little Italy is a five-block area which originated at Mulberry Bend which was once described as “the foul core of New York's slums”. During mass immigration from Italy during the 1880s, new arrivals found company with their original communities. Immigrants from Naples settled on Mulberry Street, arrivals from Puglia and Calabria gravitated towards Mott Street, those from Sicily found each other on Elizabeth Street, and immigrants from northern Italy, especially Genoa made homes on Baxter Street.

Even in its heyday, Little Italy couldn’t boast the highest concentration of Italian ancestry in the city, but it had a solid claim to be the city’s poorest Italian neighbourhood.

Prosperous Italian residents left for areas in Brooklyn and Queens. In 2004 Little Italy was described as “a veneer — 50 or so restaurants and cafés catering to tourists, covering a dense neighborhood of tenements shared by recent Chinese immigrants, young Americans who can't afford Soho, and a few remaining real live Italians." Little Italy’s cultural decline was underscored by it and Chinatown being listed together in 2010 as a single historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
