Something may have formed in the cooling of the early universe — a defect in the fabric of spacetime itself, thinner than any measurement can resolve, denser than any object in the modern cosmos, and older than everything that has ever existed.
We call them cosmic strings.
In this video, we follow them from the first fraction of the first second after the Big Bang — through the phase transitions that may have created them, through the mathematics of their impossible density, through the gravitational waves they radiate as they move, and into the territory where physics reaches its current edge and the questions become very quiet and very large.
There is no need to hold onto anything. Let the distances expand. Let the universe be as large as it actually is.
