Ghana has officially taken Togo to international arbitration over a disputed maritime boundary in the Atlantic Ocean. After nearly eight years of failed negotiations, Ghana says it wants a final legal decision on where its sea borders end and where Togo’s begin.
At the center of this case is the Keta Basin, an offshore area believed to hold large oil and gas deposits. As long as the border remains disputed, major energy companies are unwilling to invest. That means lost revenue, lost jobs, and delayed development for Ghana.
In this video, we break the issue down in simple English:
Why Ghana decided to sue now
What the maritime boundary dispute is really about
How international arbitration works
What Ghana stands to gain or lose
Why this case matters for ordinary Ghanaians
This is not a war. It is a legal fight meant to protect Ghana’s economic future while keeping peace with a neighboring country.
