Winscar Reservoir, located at Dunford Bridge in South Yorkshire, has a history rooted in the 19th century, with its initial construction as Dunford Bridge Dam in the 1850s. This earlier dam was replaced by the current Winscar Reservoir, completed in 1975, to improve water storage capacity. The original dam, while supplying water to the River Don and towns in the Spen Valley, was smaller than the current reservoir.
The original dam was replaced by Winscar Reservoir between 1972 and 1975, with the new reservoir covering 51 hectares and reaching a maximum depth of 41.8 meters.
While construction was completed in 1975, it took seven years for the reservoir to fully fill. The reservoir has experienced issues with leakage, necessitating remedial work, including the installation of a new membrane on the dam wall in the early 2000s.
Winscar Reservoir now serves as a compensation reservoir for the River Don and is a popular spot for recreation, with walking and cycling routes along its perimeter. It's located within the Peak District National Park and the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, near the village of Dunford Bridge
