Three phase fully controlled converters can operate in two modes namely rectifier and inverter mode. But if we dont want inverter mode in certain applications, best choice is go for a half controlled converter. This is economical because 3 thyristors are replaced by diodes which decreases the cost and complexity of the circuit.
