$150 no-heat no-dust ultra-coarse sharpening step

Описание: a solution for a budget no-heat (water cooled) no-dust ultra coarse step.

I've seen a handful of other people do something similar but I haven't seen anyone make the additional jump to sharpening from pottery x lapidary. if documentation of this combo exists already (pottery x lapidary x sharpening), I'd love to hear about it.

In my normal process, scratches put in by this step are followed by 200 & 1000 grit cbn wheels (wen 10" wet grinders) and a finish/deburring step on a fine ceramic stone and a powered strop. I only bring this out for heavy damage or hogging off a lot of excess bolster quickly. This has been a godsend for making short work of damaged chisels and plane blades.

parts:
vevor 11" pottery wheel ($80 when I bought it)
12" 120 grit no-hole diamond plate ($35 off ebay or aliexpress)
310mm square piece of 3d printer bed magnet sheet
$15 of garden sprayer (+ optional 1-2 fuel cutoff valves for fine water control)
drill and razor saw or hacksaw to notch one half of the water basin

The cheap 120 grit plates have some awful grit inclusions so you'll want to break in the surface with a cheap composite stone or natural stone you don't care much for. I'm sure there are nicer abrasives out there but this is what I've started with. With the really cheap diamonds, they definitely work but you end up with a handful of (larger) grit inclusions that can leave particularly deep scratches.

Having used this for a while, I may even add in an 80 grit disc as the broken-in 120 grit disc isn't quite fast enough for some jobs.

You'll also notice that I've notched out the side of the water basin-- that lets me come in from the side flush with the level of the abrasive-- some kind of brush or foam here would keep down the spray but this is fine as long as you're okay with making a little bit of a mess.

This is also great for establishing a flat surface on a heavily dished whetstone.
