The whole week was scorching hot, with temperatures above 35°C. Today was no different – the thermometer showed 37 degrees. The water level was extremely low, which already suggested that I would not find fish in my usual spots, as the water had dropped so much that it was physically impossible for fish to stay in the shallow 5–10 cm edges. Unfortunately, my fear came true, and during the first few hours, I had no bites at all. I tried every known fish-holding place, but didn’t even get a single take.

It was already past 7 PM when I decided to spend my last half hour casting into a deeper section. Throughout the whole year, this area hadn’t really produced fish, except for one or two barbel. But since the current was much weaker, even a 3.6 g spoon was enough to drift along the bottom, trying to tempt some barbel to bite. A few casts were enough to feel the first knock on the rod tip – a clear sign that I was finally in the right place.

The tactic was simple: cast into the slack water near the edge, let the lure sink quickly, then by twitching the rod tip, I bounced the spoon along the bottom. On one of these casts close to the bank, something suddenly splashed. I thought it was a chub spooking – I had seen it many times that when the lure lands too close, the fish jump out in fright and quickly swim away, making it impossible to catch them afterward. Normally, I wouldn’t cast back at them.

But this time, since I was focused on barbel, I kept casting to the edge. A few casts later, in the same spot, I again saw a fish spook – but this time, just after a few cranks, something smashed the lure! I suspected the fish hadn’t fled, and on the second cast, I managed to hook it. Because I was fishing with a stronger line, I couldn’t immediately tell the size. Only when it came close and surfaced, showing its broad back, I realized I had hooked an old warrior. You’ll see in the video how big it really was.

Just a few minutes later, I hooked into another fish – this time a barbel feeding on the bottom. From the very first seconds after the strike, I could feel its strength, and I knew it was another quality fish. I was right – it barely fit into the landing net, bending it with its weight. Definitely not just a kilo-sized one.

During the remaining 20–25 minutes, I managed to catch another smaller barbel, and one that I hooked by the tail. That one fought hard, splashing me with cold river water in the heat, which was actually refreshing.

After several hours of blank fishing, this last half hour turned the day into an unforgettable session.
