In this first episode, Most Rev. W. Shawn McKnight, Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas, and Most Rev. Ralph O’Donnell, Bishop of Jefferson City, share personal stories about receiving the call from the Apostolic Nuncio and what those moments were like in real time. They talk about celebrating Mass while waiting for the Nunciature to call back, the weight of keeping the news confidential, and the reality of preparing to leave a diocese and the people entrusted to a bishop’s care.

The conversation also looks at how formation and service at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) helps prepare bishops for leadership, including the importance of consultation, collaboration, and fraternity among bishops. The bishops reflect on the life of the Church in the United States, the responsibilities of episcopal ministry, and the need for strong relationships with brother bishops in carrying out the mission of the Church.

This episode also includes reflections on Pope Francis’s 2015 visit to the United States and memories surrounding the election of Pope Leo XIV.
