Janis Patterson (pictured), 64, of Chilwell, Nottingham, said she contacted her council and researched the law before she started flying her flags two months ago. Banners with a smiley face, a tribute for Remembrance Day (above) and Santa Claus wishing passers-by a Merry Christmas (inset) have been flown on her pole. But Broxtowe Borough Council has now sent the former WRAF drill sergeant a letter threatening her with a fine for £2,500 because of a ‘breach of advertising laws’. Mrs Patterson said: ‘I was very upset when I opened the letter with the fine. I had emailed the council and searched on Google to make sure it was OK. I asked my neighbours if they were OK with it and they said they were.' Mrs Patterson has a strong military background and said she has been around flags all her life, and has always wanted one of her own.
