To know characteristics of expressionism we should know the history and sources of
expressionism art movement. Dresden, 1905. In this wonderful city of the oriental Germany begins the history of two crucial artistic movements, known as Asbtractism and Expressionism. Albert Einstein developed his Relativity special theory, which will have significant influence on Kandinsky's vision. On june 7th, 1905, 4 artists decided to start living and creating together in a community: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt, later known as Schimdt-Rottluff. This very special talent proposed the name that this community will chose and that will become a chapter of art history: die Brucke, german name meaning “the bridge”. This name was probably inspired by the several bridges of Dresden, a city crossed by the Elbe River. On the philosophical side, those artists were attracted by the thought of Nietzsche: “what is great in the human being is that he is a bridge, not an end”.
The mission of this group was perfectly explained by the words of their Manifesto:”With faith that a new generation of creative as well as perceptive people will develop, we call together all young people, and, as youth which carries the future in itself, we want to gain for ourselves the freedom of development and liberation from the old establishment. Everyone belongs to us who directly and undivergently tires to express that which impels them to create.” They were much happy of their life in Friedrichstadt, a worker’s district of Dresden. They had weekly meetings to paint nudes and sharing ideas, in ateliers or, specially at the beginning, at Kirchner’s home. Ateliers were furnished by furnitures built by themselves, with erotic paintings on the walls.
