The modern automotive industry is dominated by complex, software-driven E/E systems, like smart headlamps, to meet demand for advanced features. Innovation is constrained by standards such as ASPICE. Traditional document-based engineering struggles with this complexity, causing inconsistent designs, and difficulty generating verifiable evidence for ASPICE audits.
This presentation shows how Capella, an open-source MBSE tool based on Arcadia, manages this complexity.
Arcadia’s layered approach aligns with ASPICE:
Operational Analysis (OA) supports SYS.1 by capturing stakeholder needs, entities, and environments, and assists SYS.2 by modeling operational behaviors and scenarios.
The System Analysis (SA) layer supports SYS.2 and SYS.3 by refining requirements into functional architectures with defined functions and exchanges.
The Logical Architecture (LA) layer corresponds to SYS.3, organizing functions into logical components, interfaces, and allocation matrices.
LA outputs—logical components, allocated requirements, and interface specifications—feed into next layers (Physical, SWE.1, HWE.1), transforming operational needs into concrete designs while maintaining traceability.
Capella’s add-ons enhance capabilities:
Requirements Viewpoint traces requirements linked to functions and architectures;
PVMT adds properties and legends to diagrams;
Matrix Views show allocation between functions and components, reducing errors;
REC/RPL captures recurring patterns for reusability;
and M2Doc generates specifications, and compliance documents from the model, providing tangible evidence for ASPICE audits.
Capella creates a single source of truth, offering audit-ready artifacts, early detection of integration issues, and reuse of functional and architectural patterns within the headlamp system. MBSE accelerates development, enhances collaboration, maintains consistency, and improves overall engineering quality, as demonstrated in the headlamp case study.
