December 3rd, 2005. In a highly anticipated rematch for the Undisputed World Middleweight Championship, Bernard Hopkins aka “The Executioner” looked to regain his glory against undefeated Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor who made the first defenses of his IBF, WBA, WBC & WBO World Middleweight Titles.

This is the first time in 10 year that Hopkins entered a fight as the challenger.

Prefight records; Hopkins 46(32)-3-1, Taylor 24(17)-0.

Earlier in July 2005, Taylor shocked the boxing world by dethroning Hopkins via SD12 to become the new Undisputed World Middleweight Champion and lifted the IBF, WBA, WBC & WBO World Middleweight Crowns. Additionally, he was also awarded the Ring Magazine Middleweight Title for his victory.

5 months later, both fighters were set to meet for a return bout.

Going into the fight, the seasoned Hopkins had garnered notable wins over the likes of Segundo Mercado, John David Jackson, Glen Johnson, Simon Brown, Carl Daniels, Antwun Echols, Syd Vanderpool, William Joppy, Keith Holmes, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya & Robert Allen (2x).

On the other hand, Taylor had defeated top oppositions such as Alex Bunema, William Joppy, Raul Marquez & Bernard Hopkins.

In the opening round, Hopkins started fast where he initiated a forward attack and connected with a good right hand which Taylor frantically retaliated with rabbit punches thus warned by referee Jay Nady. Other than that, neither fight was active for the rest of the round.

Bernard continued to be the aggressor in round 2 but Jermain would often return fire particularly to the body and was the clear winner of the round with his best shot being a left hook that knocked the challenger off balance but it was also partly due to their feet tangling during an exchange.

Taylor found the range for his jab and connected well upstairs and downstairs in rounds 3 and 4 whilst showing a good defense by consistently moving out of the way before Hopkins could launch any form of counter attacks.

Bernard found success with lead right hands and left hooks in the next round as he managed to feint his way through the champion’s jabs to dispense his shots every now and then.

Both fighters had their moments in round 6 with Hopkins’ best shot being a flush left hook early in the round while Taylor knocked the challenger backwards with a thudding jab. While each man had their moments, the Arkansan native was once again the busier fighter and was probably more effective.

Round 7 was Bernard’s best as he connected with 2 clean right hands and a left hook whilst efficiently evading Jermain’s retaliation attempts most of the time.

Both men landed their shares of clean lefts and rights in round 8 but the champion found his mark with a left-right combination twice to seal the deal just before the bell sounded, while the challenger secured round 9 with a clean lead right hand in the final seconds after a number of fairly even exchanges dispensed through 3 minutes.

Hopkins had an excellent round 10 where he connected with a number of flush right hands while Taylor was unable to land anything significant in return.

However, Jermain turned the tides in the penultimate round with clean left hooks set up with pinpoint jabs which he initiated without waiting for Bernard who managed to get in a sneaky right-left combo out of a clinch with about 25 seconds left to the bell but the champion reinforced his position with a barrage of shots to bag round 11.

In the final 3 minutes, both fighters were determined to make a strong statement which resulted in many exchanges launched and hard punches landed to the head. At one point, Bernard landed a few strong right hands to badly rock Jermain who resiliently came back with a powerful combination upstairs just before the final bell rang.

The final round was not only action-packed but razor close and could arguably go either way.

After 36 minutes of a tremendous tactical warfare, the still unbeaten Jermain Taylor remained the Undisputed World Middleweight Champion and improved his record to 25(17)-0 with all 3 judges scoring the fight 115-113 in his favor.
