The problem with mandatory gene testing for women athletes

The new rule, introduced by World Athletics, requires athletes to undertake an SRY gene test to identify whether a male Y chromosome is present.

Any athlete whose test shows the presence of the SRY gene will be banned from competing in the women’s category in elite events.

But Andrew Sinclair – who discovered the SRY gene on the human Y chromosome 35 years ago – says the science isn't so simple.
