A shocking murder in South Delhi's upscale Mount Kailash area has left residents stunned and raised disturbing questions about what drove a respected doctor to allegedly kill his long-time domestic worker in broad daylight. The case is not only about a brutal crime but also about the possible role of superstition, mental health issues, and deep-seated personal beliefs.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Meena, had been working as a house help for nearly 10 to 15 years at the residence of dermatologist Dr. Manish Gupta, 50, in Kailash Hills, Mount Kailash. His wife, Dr. Tina Gupta, is an Ayurvedic practitioner. Neighbors described Dr. Gupta as a calm, polite, and reserved individual who had been living in the area for around 15 years. That reputation has made the allegations against him even more shocking.
According to South-East Delhi DCP Dr. Hemant Tiwari, police received a PCR call at around 11:36 a.m. on Thursday reporting that a woman had been murdered on the terrace of a building in the Amar Colony area. The caller informed police that a woman was lying in a pool of blood on the rooftop of a neighboring building.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Meena's body on the terrace. A blood-stained cricket bat and a knife were also recovered from the spot. Preliminary investigation revealed that Meena had arrived at the house around 10:30 a.m. as part of her daily routine. After washing clothes, she went to the terrace to hang them out to dry. Investigators say Dr. Manish Gupta followed her to the rooftop shortly afterward.
Between approximately 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., the doctor allegedly attacked Meena with a cricket bat, striking her repeatedly on the head. After she collapsed, he allegedly stabbed her multiple times with a knife. The attack was so brutal that she died on the spot. Police say the accused then placed the weapons near the staircase before returning to the terrace.
Perhaps the most chilling aspect of the case is that the accused allegedly did not attempt to flee. According to police sources, Dr. Gupta remained sitting near the victim's body until officers arrived. During questioning, he reportedly admitted to the crime and allegedly told police, "Give me the death penalty." He was arrested at the scene, and both the cricket bat and knife used in the attack were seized as evidence.
During interrogation, Dr. Gupta allegedly claimed that Meena was bringing "negative energy" into the house and practicing black magic on his family. He reportedly believed that because of her influence, his wife and child no longer listened to him. Police sources say he had repeatedly urged his family to dismiss Meena from her job, but they refused. This issue allegedly became a recurring source of arguments within the household.
However, investigators are not relying solely on the black magic theory. Delhi Police are also examining whether the accused may have been suffering from depression, severe stress, or another mental health condition. Several acquaintances and neighbors have reportedly told investigators that they had noticed changes in his behavior in recent months. As a result, police are looking into his medical history and mental state as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has once again brought attention to the dangerous consequences that can arise when superstition, suspicion, and psychological distress intersect. While the accused's claims about black magic have attracted public attention, investigators are working to determine whether there were deeper factors behind the murder.
For now, Delhi Police have registered a murder case, arrested Dr. Manish Gupta, and launched a comprehensive investigation into all possible angles. As the probe continues, residents of Mount Kailash remain shocked that a man known for healing others could stand accused of carrying out such a brutal and horrifying killing of a woman who had served his family for more than a decade.
