STORYLINE:

Thousands of peoples carried away by Basant festival euphoria perched on the rooftops in Lahore on Saturday to celebrate the colourful kite flying festival, which marks the arrival of Spring.

Lahore is the official kite flying capital of Pakistan and Basant means "yellow" in Urdu, symbolising blossoming spring flowers.

Public parks and rooftops of big buildings, shopping areas and hotels were crowded with revellers celebrating the annual festival, including concerts and lavish dinner and dancing parties.

People headed toward high places in the walled city, considered the best for kite flying. Security was tight as government officials often take part in the celebrations.

During the festival, many people use kite string coated with powdered glass to bring down or capture other people's kites.

Men and women of all ages and social backgrounds participate in the gala.

Three people fell to their deaths from rooftops, one died as a stray bullet hit him and four men died in road accidents during the traditional kite flying festival, police said on Sunday.

About 250 people were also injured in different accidents during the Basant festival, according to the city police chief.
