China Cracks Down on Myanmar’s Deadly Scam Tech
In a significant blow to the billion-dollar "pig-butchering" industry, Chinese authorities have executed 11 members of the notorious Ming family syndicate. The group was convicted of operating lethal scam centers in northern Myanmar, where thousands were trafficked and forced to carry out online fraud.
The executions, carried out on January 29, 2026, mark a pivotal moment in Beijing’s aggressive crackdown on cross-border criminal organizations.
⚖️ The Verdict and Crimes
The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court carried out the sentences after they were approved by the Supreme People's Court. The syndicate was found guilty of a horrific range of offenses dating back to 2015:
Intentional Homicide: The group was linked to the deaths of at least 14 Chinese citizens.
Telecom Fraud: Their operations swindled victims out of approximately 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).
Violent Control: To maintain order in their "scam parks," the gang used illegal detention, kidnapping, and torture.
Illegal Gambling: The family transformed the border town of Laukkaing into a hub for casinos and illicit gambling.
🏚️ The Fall of the "Crouching Tiger Villa"
The Ming family was one of the "Four Families" that controlled the lawless Kokang region of Myanmar. Their primary base, known as Crouching Tiger Villa, became infamous as a fortified compound where trafficked workers were held against their will.
The gang's downfall began in late 2023 when Chinese pressure forced Myanmar authorities to raid the compounds. The patriarch of the family, Ming Xuechang, reportedly took his own life shortly after his arrest to avoid extradition. Among those executed this week were high-ranking members Ming Guoping, Ming Zhenzhen, and Wu Hongming.
🌏 Regional Impact
This news follows a broader trend of cooperation between China, Myanmar, and Thailand to dismantle these "scam states." Today, February 2, 2026, Chinese courts also announced the execution of four members of the rival Bai family, who were convicted of similar crimes involving a $4.2 billion scam network.
"These joint efforts to root out the 'scourges' of online gambling and telecom fraud have achieved significant results in safeguarding the lives and property of the people." — Guo Jiakun, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman
