Turn of River Student Donates Socks to Warm Hearts

For her 12th birthday, Mason Perkins wanted to give rather than receive.
"For my birthday I asked my family and my friends to bring socks instead of presents," said Mason Perkins, a seventh grader at Turn of River Middle School in Stamford.
Perkins is an ambassador for Sox Warm Hearts, a national community outreach program that aims to give socks to those in need.
"I liked the idea, so I wanted to help," said Perkins.
Monday, she and her friends and family brought over 650 pairs of socks to the New Covenant House of Hospitality in Stamford.
"Around 300 men's socks, and 200 of kids and women's socks," said Perkins.
"New Covenant House is the only soup kitchen here in Stamford," said Brian Jenkins, director of the New Covenant House, "And certainly in this cold weather, we see more than 100 individuals that come in who are in need of coats, socks. All sorts of clothing items."
But all too often, Jenkins says, socks are forgotten items.
"We don't get socks very often. Usually, only around Christmas time," said Jenkins.
"Last time I was here, it was really cold. There was snow on the ground and there was one man -- his boots were all ripped and old and he had no socks," said Perkins.
Making the 7th grader at Turn of River Middle School all the more determined to help, especially with more winter weather on the way.
"They're predicting another cold spell coming in the next few days so this is the perfect time," said Jenkins.
After Perkins' birthday this past November, she got her school involved and held a sock drive. Today, she was able to give away two pairs to each person in need.
