A raised floor keeps us off the ground. Here near the equator in South East Asia, it rains a lot, the ground can get very wet and muddy. Besides that there are snakes, centipedes, and scorpions on the ground. Being raised off the floor means we don't have to look out for them (so much). Bamboo grows very fast and it's plentiful. We can quickly harvest it and process it to create materials for numerous uses and when we are done with the hut the materials will decompose and return to the soil.

In the past the Batek people were full time hunter-gatherers, living entirely in the forest. Huts like this one would be built during the abundant fruit seasons. During that time of the year several camps of Batek families would join together near the fruiting trees. At other times of the year, Batek would typically use “haya'” shelters for about two weeks at a time, hunting and gathering the near by resources until the yams were eaten up and the animals became weary and then moving on to do the same elsewhere.

Since the 1990s this group of Batek along with other indigenous people were brought out of the forest by the Malaysian government. Much of the forest was logged and the land converted to palm, fruit and rubber plantations, gold mines, settlements for non-indigenous people, roads or flooded by dams. The remaining forests continue to be logged and forest resources that the Batek relied on in the past to maintain their hunter-gatherer economy are much deduced. Today the Batek rely heavily on monetary income and face many pressures from the outside world.
