(4 Aug 2014) French President Francois Hollande joined Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde in Liege on Monday to watch an air force flyover as part of ceremonies to commemorate the centenary of World War One.
Liege was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by France on 7 August, 1914 as Belgian troops fought against German soldiers, slowing their advance towards France.
Germany invaded neutral Belgium on 4 August, 1914, as part of a planned attack on France.
By nightfall, Britain had joined the war.
The war wasn't expected to last long. But instead of weeks, the continent was plunged into hardship and misery for more than four years.
