To become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, you must first meet the eligibility criteria set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India. Here are the steps to become an IPS officer:
Educational Qualification: You must have a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
Age limit: You should be between 21-32 years old as of 1st August of the year of examination. Age relaxation is provided to certain categories as per government rules.
Nationality: You must be a citizen of India.
UPSC Civil Services Examination: You need to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which is conducted in three stages:
a. Preliminary Examination: It consists of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper-I and Paper-II) of 200 marks each. The duration of each paper is two hours.
b. Main Examination: It consists of nine subjective-type papers of 1750 marks in total. The duration of each paper is three hours.
c. Personality Test (Interview): It is conducted for candidates who have qualified the Main Examination. The interview carries a weightage of 275 marks.
Medical and Physical Fitness: You must meet certain medical and physical standards as specified by the UPSC.
Training: After clearing the selection process, you will have to undergo training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana.
