Federica Manfredi (PhD student at the ICS - ULisboa) is member of the Excel team and she focuses on body suspensions, a contemporary body-practice involving the elevation of protagonists through hooks temporary inserted in the skin and ropes (the video involves suspension pictures: a sensible audience is warned).
Suspensions are investigated in Portugal, Italy and Norway in a multi-sited approach as practices aiming to enhance the body-perceptive abilities of suspendees, their relationships in the suspension community and their wellbeing status. Through suspensions people design who they are, tracing new human-limits of what their bodies and minds are able to do.
This video is the presentation of Federica Manfredi for the 16th European Association of Social Anthropology conference - Virtual Lisbon, 20-24 July 2020. The presentation focuses on the regenerative meaning associated to suspensions by regular practitioners.
A special thanks to all research-partners that contributed to the doctoral project "Learning to Fly. A trans-spatial ethnography on body suspensions in Europe", founded by the Foundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), reference: SFRH/BD/131914/2017.
