2. Richard Chimwendo Banda is a prominent Malawian politician and the current Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). He serves as the Member of Parliament for the Dowa East Constituency and was formerly the Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture. Chimwendo Banda was arrested in December 2025 after voluntarily surrendering to the police. He faces allegations of attempted murder and abduction stemming from a 2021 incident involving Frank Chawanda in Balaka. He has spent nearly a month in custody at Maula Prison in Lilongwe. On January 14, 2026, reports emerged that the High Court ruled for his immediate release following a judicial review. The MCP and human rights groups argue that his prolonged detention without formal charges is a case of "selective justice" and "political persecution" by the current DPP government to intimidate and destabilize the opposition. Critics view it as a cycle of political vendettas, mirroring past actions when the MCP was in power.
