Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara has become famous because of the beautiful paintings and sculpture by Solias Mendis depicting various events in the history of Sri Lanka. Kelaniya Temple believed to had been built in the era prior to the chronologically recorded history of Sir Lanka (since 543 B.C) was renovated by Prince Uttiya, brother of King Devanampiyatissa following the arrival Arahat Mahinda in 307 BC.
An experience of the serenity of Buddhism in Sri Lanka is just a 20-minute drive away from Colombo. The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya was built in commemoration of Lord Buddha’s 3rd visit to Sri Lanka and inside lies precious ancient art and artefacts relating to the religion.
