In this short, text-only lecture (13 slides, under 7 minutes), we introduce Shams al-Din of Tabriz (Shams-e Tabrizi)—the enigmatic wandering mystic whose encounter with Jalal al-Din Rumi reshaped the course of Persian Sufism and world literature. We cover what can be responsibly stated about Shams’s life, his teachings as preserved in the Maqalat (Discourses), and how Shams’s presence transforms Rumi’s poetry—most famously in the Divan-i Shams-i Tabrizi.
We also address Kimia Khatoon, a figure remembered in later Mevlevi tradition, and explain why modern scholarship treats many details about her—and Shams’s final years—with careful caution due to the nature of the sources. The goal is clarity, context, and credentialed scholarship, without sensationalism.
