Almost every day, another woman in Ireland is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a gynaecological cancer with one of the lowest survival rates.
Luna Stockmann, PhD student at Dublin City University, is on a mission to change that. Her project, OvaLoad, funded by Breakthrough Cancer Research through the Research Ireland Enterprise Partnership Scheme, explores a smarter, more precise approach to treating ovarian cancer.
By combining two types of targeted therapies - Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs) and PARP inhibitors - Luna aims to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy ones. These therapies work together to overload the cancer cells' DNA, leaving them unable to recover, and ultimately, helping more people survive ovarian cancer with fewer side effects.
Her innovative work could offer new hope to people whose tumours no longer respond to existing treatments.
