The Lonja de la Seda in Valencia is a masterpiece of Valencian civil Gothic located in the historic center of the city of Valencia (Spain). Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, it is located in Plaza del Mercado, number 31, in front of the Iglesia de los Santos Juanes and the Mercado Central in Valencia.
The name given to the Lonja de la Seda building derives from the fact that silk weaving was the most powerful industry in the city from the 14th to the 18th century. In the fourteenth century there were already local sederos, mostly Jewish, and later converts , grouped in 1465 in the "brotherhood of the Virgen de la Misericordia", under whose dedication there is a chapel in the Lonja built between 1484 and 1486.
The UNESCO considered it as a World Heritage Site in 1996 since "the site is of outstanding universal value as it is a wholly exceptional example of a secular building in late Gothic style, which dramatically illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities.
