A shout out to the face book page “Border Reiver Family Heritage & Genealogy,” to which I’m a proud member for pointing out Clan Riddell and this wonderful forgotten estate. .
Mr Sprot brought the house in the mid 1800s from the Riddell family which had habited the house for over 700 years through all the rough times which took place in the Scottish Borders in bygone times. The Grants which look after and run he estate in 2019 are direct descendants from LT John Sprot the rich business man that made a fortune in London. The tower he built on an old fort in the grounds of the house is impressive and if you can manage the spiralling stairs up your rewarded with an original room with a fireplace and excellent views.

Take a good book some firewood and a flask of whiskey and go visit Riddell estate marvel at the grand old house as you make your way to the tower a stout heart is needed to climb the spiralling staircase with its low railing to the beautiful room with a view at the top.
