Gospel legend Hulah Gene Dunklin Hurley (1928 - 2006) was one of the most unusual singers ever heard. She was blessed with an abundance of vocal and musical talent; which included an almost impossible range and unbelievable control of her voice. Hulah's original aspirations were to become a classical concert artist.
Hulah's singing career began at a very early age when she sang her first solo at
the Olivet Baptist Church at the tender age of three. During her early years, Hulah Gene received her first opportunity to broadcast on the radio through a program sponsored b the United Gospel Singers. She later became a featured soloist on the weekly broadcast of the Church of Our Faith, under the pastorate of Rev Cornelius Barns and Assistant, Rev. Willie Travitt.
In the late fifties, a growing ministry developed in Detroit that produced the city's most prominent radio ministry; The Church of Our Prayer and its 500 voice choir became the pinnacle of gospel music in the city and Hulah Gene was the premier soprano soloist. Under the leadership of its Pastor and Founder, the late Rev. James L. Lofton Sr., and the Minister of Music, the late Rev. Charles A. Craig, II, the church's weekly radio broadcast was known as the "place to be" on Sunday evenings. When Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr., organized the Prayer Tabernacle Church, Hulah became a part of the incomparable Voices of Tabernacle choir under the direction of Pastor Craig and the late Rev. James
Cleveland. Again, her association with this outstanding musical aggregation gave rise to her musical status in the city and across the country.
In 1962, Hulah was joined in singing songs of praise by her daughter Carolynne. Together they recorded four albums with the assistance of Rev. Cleveland for the Savoy Record Company.
During the years Hulah lent her amazing vocals to other group and choirs. She was also the musical director for a number of choirs in her career. Throughout her music ministry, Hulah received numerous awards and citations from local as
well as national civic groups for her outstanding vocal abilities. On October 26, 2002, Hulah Gene was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
On January 25, 2006 she stepped on over, with that radiant smile on her face,
to take refuge in the arms of the Savior, and join that Heavenly Choir around God's throne.
From a 1994 release by Donald Vail-A Sunday Morning Songbook, I'll Praise His Name. Hulah originally recorded this song with the Voices Of Tabernacle in 1960.
