LEAD IN:
Jakarta residents are trying a new way to avoid the city's notorious traffic jams altogether- by travelling on water taxis operating in its river.
But despite early optimism, this water transportation is beset by many problems including garbage and low water levels.
STORYLINE:
As the river which snakes its way across a large part of Jakarta, Ciliwung river is well known for many things.
It's heavily polluted with household garbage and industrial waste.
The colour of the water is dark brown.
And the stench of Ciliwung keeps most residents away.
Now these water taxis are Jakarta administration's latest answer to traffic woes.
Each passenger pays1,500 rupiahs, the equivalent of 20 cents US$, for a one-way trip down the river.
The two boats, can carry just 25 passengers each.
