Math Teacher explains the Box Method of Factoring is this easy tutorial! To factor using the box method, we first need 4 terms to our polynomial. If the polynomial has 4 terms already, then you can go straight to the box method and enter those 4 terms into the box starting at the upper left and working your way to the lower right. Then follow the steps I show in this tutorial to find the factors of the polynomial. This is a great visual representation, which is also known as the area model. We think of of the two sides as length and width, and multiply them together!
If the polynomial only has 3 terms, you should multiply "a" (the leading coefficient of the polynomial) by "c" (the constant term of the polynomial). Then look for two numbers that multiply to a*c and add to b. This is also known as the ac method of factoring. Using these two numbers, you will rewrite the middle term as the sum of two like terms. Then you will have 4 terms to enter in to the box and perform the box method of factoring.
