Most of the modern people believe that yoga is an effective gymnastics, able to heal and rejuvenate the body, it is an activity that relieves stress and provides harmony.
Some people go to yoga classes in fitness clubs because they want to improve their figure, relax after a hard day's work or heal their back.
However, if we together with you get to know the basics of yoga and take the yoga books that have been left to us from the sages of the past, we will find that yoga is understood much more broadly and the benefits of yoga that modern people are looking for are rather a side effect of regular yoga classes.
The word yoga itself comes from the Sanskrit word 'yujin' which means union, connection or togetherness.
The purpose of yoga is to unite our self, this formed personality with which we associate ourselves, usually our body, with a much more perfect (higher) part of our being.
Perfect and wise part of ourselves is called differently in different concepts, cultures, religions, but main essence (idea) is the same.
It is the divine energy, spirit, God, Atman, Absolute, Inner Sage, Universe or Higher Mind. There are many epithets to express that, but the basic remains one - yoga shows path that can lead from the external to the internal, allow a better understanding of the absolute laws (laws of life, laws of universe) and become truly useful for this world - find your place in this world.
One of the goals of yoga is the ability to control your mind and use this great instrument for its intended purpose. If the mind is not controlled, it makes us selfish (egoistic), filled with fears and anxiety, and does not give us the opportunity to be happy, calm and in harmony.
The basics of yoga are described in books that have been left to us from the past.
Here are some of the yoga books that, from our point of view, are the most authoritative and describe the basics and principles of yoga from both a practical and a theoretical point of view.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Hatha Yoga Pradipika
Three Parts of the Bihar School of Yoga (3 books)
Hatha Yoga Dipika (B.K.S. Ajengar)
Shiva Samhita.
Gheranda Samhita.
Good luck in your yoga practice!
