Ahead of you the manor rises up from the garden in honey-coloured stone, ivy climbing its walls like it's been meaning to get around to it for a few decades. Mullioned windows catch the sun and hold it. The foxgloves along the border are almost embarrassingly purple. You didn't know a place could feel this deliberate.

You don't walk toward it. You just stand here, under the oak, in the Elizabethan manor garden, and let spring do what spring does.

The birdsong starts — or maybe it was always there and you're only just hearing it now. Sweet and layered and completely unbothered by you. A breeze moves through the canopy and the leaves answer it quietly, the way they do when nothing is wrong. There's no music. There's never been music here. An hour goes by. You don't notice.

Some people just need ten hours of an Elizabethan manor garden at golden hour to remember that they're allowed to exist quietly.
