Migrants who have crossed the Channel on small boats could be returned to France by the end of the month after the first individuals were detained under the new one-in, one-out treaty.

Video released by the Home Office showed several migrants being escorted to Harmondsworth immigration removal centre by Heathrow where they will be detained until they are ready to be deported to France.

The Home Office said that it would not disclose how many migrants have been detained or any information such as their nationality owing to concerns that it would be exploited by people smugglers to change their tactics.

The first group to be detained were among the 155 migrants who arrived in two dinghies on Wednesday, the first crossings since the deal with France came into effect.

They were taken to the Home Office processing centre in Manston, Kent where Border Force officers selected several adults who will be the first to be removed to France. After being taken into custody, they were transported to Harmondsworth, one of the seven immigration removal centres in the UK, by the Home Office’s private contractor Mitie Care & Custody, which runs most of the detention centres and supplies immigration escorts.
