A funicula is a type of cable railway system which connects points along a railway track laid on a steep slope. The system is characterized by two counterbalanced carriages (also called cars or trains) permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. The result of such a configuration is that the two carriages move synchronously as one ascends, the other descends at an equal speed. This feature distinguishes funiculars from inclined elevators, which have a single car that is hauled uphill
Saptashrungi Devi Temple Has India’s First Funicular Trolley
To reach, Saptashrungi Devi temple nestled at a height of 4500 feet, devotees need to climb 510 steps. The next best option is to take India’s first-ever funicular trolley that takes just 2 minutes to cover the same distance. The funicular trolley is a pair of vehicles pulled atop a slope by a cable. It loops over a pulley wheel at the upper end of the track. The trolley counterbalances as one vehicle ascend, the other descends. The trolley has an elevation of 330 feet, this helps devotees commute to the temple in just 3 minutes instead of climbing 510 steps.
