Echoes of Eternity

Is an echo just a repetition of what once was? A reverb that fades? Or a purely acoustic phenomenon that teaches us nothing new? Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius saw things differently: 'What we do now, echoes in eternity'. Everything we do, sound, create… has a meaning, a reverberation, an impact on what is to come.
This program invites the listener to discover many echoes: sometimes concrete, sometimes symbolic, as sound, as an experience, as a memory, or as a tribute. Echoes of tradition reverberate in new sounds. The orchestra takes you to old masters such as Homer, Gabrieli and Bach, but at the same time introduces new work that will continu to resonate...

Part 6: A Gabrieli Fantasy (Bert Appermont) - World première for fanfare orchestra

The 16th-century composer Giovanni Gabrieli was one of the first to experiment with multi-choral instrumental and vocal music. To achieve this, he made use of orchestras in distributed setups. Playing with dialogues and echoes, he pushed the acoustical boundaries of the places where his work was performed, especially St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

The Belgian-Limburgish composer Bert Appermont started from Gabrieli's 'Canzon in Double Echo à 12', composing five overlapping variations. However, concert halls that cannot evoke the beautiful sound of St Mark’s do not do the old master justice. That's why the composer used an unusual stage layout to provide a special listening experience: three smaller groups, distributed on the left, right and center of the stage.

The piece was originally written for Brass Band Valaisia from Switzerland, and played at the European Brass Band Championships and at the World Championships in Kerkrade in 2022. On a request of Kempenbloei, Appermont made a version of the piece for fanfare orchestra, and the band used it to conclude their winning participation in the fanfare band concert division of the WMC 2022.
