Around 1983, it seemed Tokyo Blade were destined to become the next Iron Maiden. But somehow it wasn’t to be – history was not kind to them! Even though, by standing the test of time, Tokyo Blade became one giant star of the celebrated NWOBHM movement.
History says, the awesome Genghis Khan, in their short life, overtook and released an excellent ep, "Double Dealin" in 1983. It was re-released a year later under the Tokyo Blade logo as "Midnight Rendezvous". Already before the release of "Double Dealin", Genghis Khan have been renamed Tokyo Blade and are releasing their self-titled album, one of the best samples of NWOBHM.
For the release of their second album "Night Of The Blade", changes happened in the structure of the band. Singer Alan Marsh and bassist Andy Robbins (both genuine members of Genghis Khan with guitarist Andy Boulton) have left and were replaced by Vic Right and Andy Wrighton respectively. It is noteworthy that, initially the album was recorded with Alan in the voice and then re-recorded with Vic but keeping the backing vocals of Alan.
In 1998, "Night Of The Blade… The Night Before" was released, which is the original recordings with Alan behind the microphone. And for those who were disappointed with the new musical style of Tokyo Blade, soon the original force of this eponymous album will attack the speakers. Their good old aggressive attitude takes it all in stride and shows their ability to thicken fast-paced compositions with killer riffs, that sounds like moving heavily on train tracks without brakes. Continuation with the thunderous resonance of ‘Rock Me To The Limit’, gradually rising in intensity of 'Warrior Of The Rising Sun', ‘Unleash The Beast’, and ‘Dead Of The Night’, gives hair-raising impulses on each repeat and is characterized by a working-class music paste.
So, what you hear on “Night Of The Blade … The Night Before” is the original version of the second album (with wizard Alan Marsh on vocals), which not only proved the value of this re-release, but also further establish the unsurpassed ingenuity and timeless legacy of this band, even 40 years later.
