“Whiskey Before Breakfast” is a well-known fiddle reel associated with Manitoba fiddler Andy DeJarlis, who published it in 1957 in Canadian Fiddle Tunes from the Red River Valley. Although he is often credited with popularizing the tune, it likely circulated earlier within Métis fiddle traditions of the Canadian Prairies. “Cat Scratch Reel” comes from the French-Canadian tune Reel du chat grafigné, a traditional Québec reel passed down orally among fiddlers and commonly played for social dancing. Together these tunes reflect the close musical connections between Métis and French-Canadian fiddle traditions and the shared rhythmic energy that characterizes much of Canada’s fiddle repertoire.
