How to use grids in photography + virtual studio demo!

In this video I'll demo how I use grids including some practical examples in a virtual environment!

Grids are really great at controlling light and are a staple in my work. I use them 3 ways:

⭐ 1) To create a tight beam of light

The first way that I use grids is as a tight beam of light, for example to illuminate a subject’s face or highlight only a portion of what I want the viewer to focus on.

⭐ 2) To control the spill of light

Using a grid is a great way to prevent light from hitting other areas of your photo, such as the backdrop, or on the rest of the subject.

⭐ 3) To prevent lens flare

Similar to point 2, I use grids to also help prevent lens flare and light getting back into the camera.

Now of course there are other ways you can use grids, but these are primarily how I use them.

Grids come different sizes but are generally measured in degrees. A good way of remembering it is, the bigger the number, the wider the area that the grid can concentrate light on and vice versa.

Some grids fit directly on to your light, or on a modifier.

If you’ve never tried grids before, a great place to practice wide range of them all at once is in a virtual studio environment.

I use a software called Set.a.Light 3D to often test and pre plan things out. I love being able to visualize in real time how I want a shoot to go. It’s super accurate and fun to use. It's great for those who don't have access to a studio as well.
