Colby Dye brings us some relevant information on backyard mammals we can spot in Kentucky! Armadillos are a newer invasive, seen a lot more often as roadkill on major roads. The species seen here is the nine-banded armadillo. It can’t roll into a ball, so its defense is to jump straight up, which is why it gets frequently hit by cars. They can potentially carry leprosy, so avoid contact. With mammals, there are a few diseases that can hurt our wildlife if left unchecked. Although rare, rabies has been found in raccoons and skunks, so it is important to secure trash receptacles. Chronic wasting disease affects deer, so follow KDFWR rules and guidelines. Living in cave country, it is common to hear about bats and see them at night. Many people worry about getting sick from bats, but it's really the other way around. White Nose Syndrome kills bats, so cave gear should be cleaned after caving. Squirrels, Chipmunks, and Rabbits are the most common backyard creatures to see, especially active during the summer. One thing to watch for while mowing are rabbit nests. Look for brown grass circles. While they are fun for some, these animals can be a nuisance to others in the garden and landscape. Moving a food and water source away from your garden still gives them their needs.
