In this lecture, we study Stage 3 of Hadith Compilation, focusing on the period of the Successors (Tābiʿūn) from 100 AH to 200 AH — a crucial era in the formal and organized preservation of Hadith.
After learning from the Companions, the Tābiʿūn began compiling Ahadith in written journals (Suhuf), ensuring that the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ were preserved with greater accuracy and structure. This period marked a clear shift from primarily oral transmission to systematic written documentation.
🔹 Why Was Writing Hadith Necessary in This Era?
In this session, we explain the major reasons behind the need for written compilation:
• Rapid expansion of the Islamic empire and longer chains of narrators
• Martyrdom and passing away of senior Companions
• Difficulty of relying solely on memory, especially among non-Arab Muslims
• Rise of fabrication attempts
• Official instructions of the caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz to gather and document Hadith
We also discuss the important contribution of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, who played a major role in producing written collections during this period.
🔹 Prominent Successors and Early Scrolls
This lecture highlights the efforts of notable scholars of the Tābiʿūn generation, including:
• Saeed ibn Jubayr
• Hammam ibn Munabbih – compiler of Al-Sahifah al-Sahihah
• Mujahid ibn Jabr
• Muhammad al-Baqir
Their writings laid the foundation for later comprehensive Hadith collections.
🔹 Musannaf and Musnad Collections
We also explain two major types of Hadith compilation that developed in this era:
Musannaf Collections – Arranged according to topics such as salah, zakat, purity, and inheritance.
The earliest surviving example is the Muwatta of Malik ibn Anas.
Musnad Collections – Arranged according to chains of narrators (Isnad), grouped under the names of Companions.
The most famous example is the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, containing thousands of narrations.
