Gule Wamkulu is more than a dance; it is a living expression of history, identity, and ancestral spirit.
Rooted in the traditions of the Chewa people of Malawi (also found in parts of Zambia and Mozambique), Gule Wamkulu is a sacred masquerade that connects the living with the spirit world.
Performed by initiated members of the Nyau society, each masked figure represents spirits of ancestors, animals, or social characters, carrying deep moral, spiritual, and historical meanings. The drums, movements, and powerful costumes are not for entertainment alone; they are messages, teachings, and reminders of where the people come from.
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Gule Wamkulu appears during important moments such as initiations, funerals, harvest celebrations, and community rituals.
Come live this unique and powerful experience, where dance becomes storytelling, masks become spirits, and culture comes alive before your eyes.
✨ This is Gule Wamkulu — the great dance of Malawi.
