In this video Tom Semiklose talks about the basic spring adjustments of a gangway, he talks about various issues that can lead to a gangway not functioning properly and what you can do to resolve those issues.
My name is Tom Semiklose, I'm the vice president of sales for SafeRack and today if you're watching this video, you probably need to adjust your springs.
Your operator deploys the Gangway when it goes in a down position, it should stop wherever he wants it to, he should be able to raise it into a position and stop it, should not bounce up or down, this is the gangway operating properly.
If your operator pushes foot lock and the gangway falls to the down position and you have a hard time raising the gangway back up, you need to adjust the springs. To fix the problem of your gangway following too fast, you need to raise the spring yoke assembly, to do this, raise the top nut first on both sides of these spring yoke assemblies, raise the gangway and then tighten the bottom nut on the spring yoke assembly, this should fix your problem.
Make sure when you're adjusting the spring yoke assembly to make minor adjustments, half inch to one inch.
To correct the problem of the gangway falling down too fast you need to raise the spring assembly up, you'll raise the top nut up first, raise the spring yoke assembly up and then tighten down the bottom nut on the spring yoke assembly. Most of the time if you move the nuts up, it raises the spring assembly and it will fix this problem, you deploy the gangway and it will not stay in the down position, you need to adjust the spring yoke assembly.
First, you need to set the safety chain so the gangway does not fall, second is move both nuts down on both sides of the gangway and the spring yoke assembly, deploy the gangway down and then tighten the top nuts down, this should fix your problem.
The last problem you could be having with your gangway is wanting to pop up before it gets to the mid-range position and beyond the mid-range position falling down, this is one of the most difficult problems to fix but there are three adjustment points that you can work with on the gangway, the spring yoke assembly, the eyebolt assembly on the inboard side and the eyebolt assembly on the outboard side of the gangway.
If you continue to have issues with your springs, please call us toll free at 866-761-7225 for immediate assistance.
Beyond your regular plant maintenance, you need to check your eyebolt and shackle regularly, especially for high usage gangways and this is on both ends and on both springs.
