MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT:

What is urinary tract ?
The urinary tract is the network of organs and tubes that process and carry urine out of the body.
The kidney( makes urine).
The ureters are tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
The bladder stores urine.
The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outer side of the body.

Urinary tract Infection (UTI)
When germs ( called bacteria ) get into the urinary tract, they can cause an infection,
UTI refers to a bacterial infection of the bladder ( cystitis) or the kidneys ( pyelonephritis ).

Causes of UTI?
Caused by bacteria that get into the bladder from the skin surface surrounding the urethra.
Germs that live in the large intestine and are in stool can get in the urethra.
UTI is much more common in girls presumably because they have shorter urethras.

Symptoms of UTI
In a baby or a young child, look for:a fever not caused by the flu or another known illness.
Urine that has a strange smell
Vomiting
The child not being hungry
Older children are more likely to have common symptoms, such as:
Pain or burning when they urinate.
Needing to urinate often red, pink, cloudy, or foul-smelling urine.
Pain in the flank ( which is felt just below the rib cage and above the waist on one or both sides of the back )
Lower belly pain

Diagnosis of UTI
Physical exam by doctor
Lab tests like urinalysis and a urine culture, to check for germs in the urine.
It takes 1 to 2 days to get the result of a urine culture.

Treatment of UTI
Your child will take antibiotics for a urinary tract infection.
Do not stop it just because your child feels better ( consult your doctor )
Have your child drink extra fluids to flush out the germs.
Call the doctor if your child isn’t feeling better within 2 days after starting the medicine.

How to prevent UTI
Let your child empty his/ her bladder regularly at least once in 3 to 4 hours.
Constipation and pinworms can also put a child at risk of a UTI ( Treat them immediately if present ).
Periodic urine cultures during the first year after a child’s first UTI help prevent it.
Early diagnosis and early treatment are the most important steps in preventing UTI.
