On my website you will also find many other editions — both classical masterpieces and popular songs — carefully prepared with attention to pianistic comfort and musical logic.
Let me share my personal story connected to this brilliant Prelude by Johann Sebastian Bach and how I eventually arrived at this edition.
I first learned this Prelude when I was 12 years old (I am 42 now, if anyone is curious 🙂). Around that time, I transferred to a new teacher at music school — the one who truly ignited my musical spark. This Prelude and Fugue were among the first serious works she assigned to me after about six months of study.
I learned the notes quite quickly, both the Prelude and the Fugue, and then the real work began — deep musical work alongside many other pieces.
Unfortunately, I broke my arm several times when I was young. Yet even that difficulty led me to discover something valuable. During recovery periods, my teacher would play the right hand while I played the left. I still remember those lessons — they felt unusual, almost intimate, and deeply musical. It shaped how I listen to polyphony to this day.
I performed the Prelude and Fugue at a competition, then moved on to other repertoire. Years later, while studying at the conservatory, I returned to C minor and rediscovered it again. After that, it would rest for years at a time, though I would occasionally revisit the text.
Even as a teenager, I felt the desire to slightly hold the upper notes of the hidden melody. However, in certain places — for example in the bass of measures 7 and 9 — it did not work consistently. I concluded, rather logically at the time, that if it cannot be done everywhere, then perhaps it should not be done at all.
Later, as an adult, I experimented with bringing out those notes using accents — as some pianists do. But it always felt forced, even harsh.
Only now have I found what feels like a natural and final solution — the version you see and hear here.
The key insight is this: while gently sustaining the hidden melodic tones, one must simultaneously remain aware of the “buzzing” sixteenth notes underneath. If you choose to hold the upper tones and certain bass notes slightly longer, there is no need to accent them. Simply let your hands sink into the keyboard — like into water — and listen deeply. Think ahead. Allow the sound to bloom naturally.
I hope you enjoy this edition.
