In today’s video, I react to the heartbreaking story of Mercedes Wells — a pregnant Black woman in Indiana who was discharged from the hospital while in active labor and ended up giving birth on the side of the road just eight minutes later. This is exactly what many people mean when they talk about Black women being dismissed, ignored, or mistreated in medical settings.

We break down what happened, why the hospital fired the nurse and doctor involved, why “cultural competency training” is now being pushed, and how this case fits into the larger crisis of Black maternal mortality in America. The CDC numbers don’t lie — Black women face significantly higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth, even when income, education, and healthcare access are the same.
